Remembering Bollywood’s legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra

Yash Chopra, who is known as ‘King of Romance’, has given a new definition to romance, and in his career of 53 years he has helmed some of the most classic cult films. From Amitabh Bachchan to Shah Rukh Khan, many actors and actresses owe numerous successful films of their career to this renowned thespian. Though ‘the man who immortalized love’ is no more, but he will be remembered for his notable work left behind.


On this occasion of his birthday, let’s take a look at some of his unforgettable masterpieces which will remain etched in our minds.

Waqt

‘Waqt’ was the third film directed by Yash Chopra. This 1965 Indian film, which actually started a trend of multi-starrer movies in Bollywood, turned out to be a Box-Office hit. The story of ‘lost and found family’ was appreciated by the people and Yash Chopra went on to bag his first Filmfare Award for Best Director. ‘Waqt’ kick started Chopra’s career and it also made into British Film Insitute’s list of films in consideration for their top ten of Indian films award.

Deewaar

This Indian crime-drama flick, which is responsible for establishing megastar Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘angry-young man’ image, was a super hit. The story of two brothers- Amitabh and Shashi Kapoor- at loggerheads and the debate between right and wrong went ahead to garner positive reception from the audience and the critics. ‘Deewaar’ is one of such Chopra’s works which is still fondly remembered especially for its famous dialogues. Yash Chopra was once again honoured with Filmfare Best Director Award for his outstanding work.

Kabhie Kabhie

In 1976 Yash Chopra came up with a romantic-drama flick starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Raakhee, Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor. This movie went on to become one of the highest grossing movies of the year. The melodious tracks along with the outstanding love story and Bollywood’s maestro Yash Chopra’s direction made ‘Kabhie Kabhie’ a classic hit.

Silsila

This romantic flick starring Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, Jaya Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar and Shashi Kapoor surprisingly didn’t create ripples at the Box-Office. But with time it is still remembered as one of Chopra’s best works. Chopra has beautifully portrayed the romance and affairs outside marriage and at the end effortlessly put across a message- ‘Love is faith and faith is forever’. The combination of soulful music along with beautiful pairing and onscreen chemistry between the leading actors made this movie a classic cult.

Chandni

In 1989, Yash Chopra was back with another blockbuster ‘Chandni’ which featured Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna. The movie, which portrayed beautiful scenes of Switzerland outstandingly, was said to be the most watched movie in the Indian Film Industry. This movie not only affirmed Sridevi’s position as one of the leading actresses in those times but it also helped Yash Chopra bag the National Award for ‘Chandni’ being the most popular film.

Dil Toh Pagal Hai

Who can forget the love triangle between Rahul, Nisha and Pooja- played by Shah Rukh Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit and Akshay Kumar. ‘Dil Toh Pagal Hai’ was the perfect cocktail of ideal music, good acting and not to forget great direction. This movie bagged seven Filmfares, three National Film Awards and ten Zee Cine Awards under different categories. Yash Chopra was once again successful in immortalizing love on-screen.

Veer-Zaara

After a break of seven years Yash Chopra was back again with the Indian romantic drama film ‘Veer-Zaara’. The narrative revolves around the love story of Squadron Leader Veer Pratap Singh- played by Shah Rukh Khan, and a rich Pakistani woman- played by Preity Zinta set against the backdrop of conflict between India and Pakistan. It garnered positive response from both the audience as well as critics. ‘Veer-Zaara’ not only won Filmfare Award fro Best Film, but it also bagged a National Award fro most popular movie.
